Written by on April 23, 2024

What started at Columbia University is fast becoming widespread. Reports reaching us is that the fire has spread across five states and a dozen top American universities where students pitched tents and set up “liberated zones” on campuses.

Protests over the war in Gaza have taken hold at a handful of elite American university, as officials scramble to defuse demonstrations.

The New York Police Department cracked down on student protesters on April 18 and arrested over 100 students. On April 22, Yale University too called in the police and around 40 people were arrested.

The demonstration wave has been tainted by alleged anti-semitic incidents, which have been seriously condemned by the White House.

Campuses in the United States have been severely rocked by the heated debated and demonstration actions concerning the Israel-Gaza war. There has also been debated surrounding Free Speech since the Hamas massacre on Israel on 7 October, 2023, which prompted Israel’s campaign in Gaza.

Students have recorded an increase in both anti-semitic and Islamophobic incidents since.

President Joe Biden in an interview, said he condemned both the anti-semitic protests, as well as those who don’t care to understand what is going on with the Palestinians.

With tensions and security concerns mounting, Columbia University has cancelled physical classes pending the resolution of the tension and conflict.
