OLANIYAN SAYS IMPEACHMENT PANEL UNCONSTITUTIONAL

Written by on July 15, 2022

Oyo State Deputy Governor, Rauf Olaniyan has reacted to the constitution of a 7-man impeachment panel headed by Oyo State Chief Judge, Munta Abimbola.
This comes on the heels of the directive by the Oyo State House of Assembly to the chief judge to constitute the impeachment panel.
You would recall that that an Oyo State High Court presided over by Justice Ladiran Akintola on Thursday dismissed a suit filed by Olaniyan challenging the propriety of the procedures by the lawmakers.
But, Olaniyan had through his lawyer, Chief Afolabi Fashanu SAN immediately filed a notice of appeal and an application for stay of execution of the judgment at the Appeal court barely an hour after the judgment was delivered.
The panel was however inaugurated on Friday led the chief judge.
But Olaniyan’s lawyer Chief Afolabi Fashanu SAN in a statement late on Friday noted that the constitution of the members of the impeachment panel was unconstitutional, wrongful and illegal.
He said that “It is no longer news that His Lordship went ahead to constitute the panel in spite of the clear notice of pending appeal and application for Stay of Execution.”
Chief Fashanu said that the “Chief Judge as no 1 citizen in the Judiciary should have respected the judicial process”
